All about The Church Hill Lookout

From East Broad Street to your inbox

Hey, it’s me, Dave Infante, your neighbor on East Broad Street.

The Church Hill Lookout is an idea I’ve been kicking around for the past year and finally decided to take the plunge. We’re lucky to have excellent statehouse coverage from the Virginia Mercury, and I’m a big fan (and paying subscriber!) of The Richmonder’s local news coverage, but I felt like Church Hill was missing a proper neighborhood blog, and I occasionally have some ideas, man, so… here we are. I’m aiming for a hodgepodge of smart and silly coverage and commentary about living in the East End.

I’m going to experiment a bit with this over the next few months to see what sticks. Hope you enjoy. Tell your friends/neighbors to sign up, it;’s free:

Questions? Gossip? Ideas for recurring features? Bang my line anytime: [email protected]. Looking forward to hearing from you!

📰 More about The Church Hill Lookout’s coverage

For now, editions will publish weekly-ish, and will include the following items:

  • The Lede: A ~500-word column on a matter of significance to people who live and work in Church Hill—fun, serious, or somewhere in between.

  • Possum Poetry: Original verse about a piece of neighborhood trash written by Penelope Poubelle, the Lookout’s litter critter-at-large.

  • A Very CHill Photo: Street scenes, street-style portraits, and more from around the East End.

I anticipate playing around with the format and running one-off features here and there. If you’ve got ideas for The Lookout’s coverage, please don’t hesitate to get in touch: [email protected].

Reprints: I’m generally open to other publications syndicating The Lookout’s columns, with a prominent link-back and proper credit. Editors interested in reprints should contact [email protected] for permission.

Pitches: The Lookout is not currently accepting submission, mostly because I don’t have the time or money to commission and edit work from others. Maybe that will change in the future, watch this space for updates.

Biases: This isn’t a newspaper, and I don’t intend to operate it under the false pretense of Objective Journalism™️. The Lookout will always strive to produce fair and honest reporting and commentary, and adhere to standard journalistic ethics, like offering named subjects of criticism the opportunity to respond on the record before publication, disclosing conflicts of interest, and so forth. But if I think something sucks shit, I’m going to say so. If that’s going to be a problem for you, start your own neighborhood newsletter, I guess?
